Babbitt Family Notes
The Babbitt family history is an interesting one that began with Edward Bobett back in 1635.  We will begin with Job Babbitt who came to Illinois via, Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Job Babbitt was the son of Job and Sarah Parkhurst Babbitt.  Job was born in 1783 in Green, County, PA.  He married Nancy Menaugh( born 1784 in Tyrone Co., Ireland), around 1800.  It is estimated they arrived in Illinois in 1828 and settled near Troy in 1830.  Job is credited for naming Union Township.  He was in the War of 1812 serving in Ohio.  Job and Nancy had eight children: Jane, Sarah, Stephen, Eleanor, Jonathan, James, Hugh, and Job.   Job died on June 5, 1850 and Nancy died in 1864.

Hugh Babbitt was born on July 17, 1817 in Scott Co., Indiana.  He married Margaret Jones on April 21, 1839.  From this union came eleven children: Luther, Phoebe, Sarah, Nancy, Mary, Harvey, Thomas, Charles, William, Benjamin and James.  Hugh served in Co. G. 50th Illinois Infantry.  He returned to Illinois and resumed his farming.  Around 1863 he moved his family to Iowa and lived on a 400 acre farm near Sewal, Iowa, from 1873 to 1879.  Due to poor health he lost the farm. Hugh died on October 24, 1882 in Wayne Co., Iowa and is buried in Richardson Chapel Cemetery.  Margaret was born  on May 26, 1815 in Jackson  County, Ohio daughter of Charles and Phoebe Workman Jones.  After the death of Hugh it is speculated that Margaret was living with her daughter, Phoebe Cather in Kansas.  Margaret died May, 8, 1893.

Nancy Ann Babbitt Irons was born near St. Augustine, April 17, 1848.  On November 26, 1866 she married Joseph Daniel Irons..  To this union were  born seven children: Lola Viola, Leonard, Vella, Nancy, Albert, Bertha and an infant.
Nancy had been in failing health for several years and she passed away in her home in Abingdon, Sunday evening, July 10th.  Funeral service were held at the First Methodist Church.  For more on J. D. Irons see Irons Family Notes.
